10 most annoying cliches in teen dramas

1.)High schools are always named after the small town where they are situated. For example if a place is called 'XYZ-ville' the high school will undoubtedly be called 'XYZ-ville High'. Duh do not expect the founders of American high schools to be endowed with a better imagination.

2.)The male and female protagonists would invariably have a troubled past, i.e, either their parents died or divorced when they were kids or he/she is an illegitimate child. This of course has inflicted a deep emotional scar on them which usually manifests in the form of them smoking pot or engaging in illegal activities.

3.)No high school would ever have a uniform. I mean how else will all the hot girls get to sit in the most provocative of poses, sporting the shortest of skirts/shorts and cleavage-displaying blouses?

4.)High-school students are perpetually 16-year olds. Doesn't matter even if the lead actor looks like he could be married with a 10-year old. He is 16 and you gotta believe it and fawn over him.

5.)The female protagonist is mostly a brunette with a miss-goody-two-shoes air about her. (Let's call her Miss GTS for convenience shall we?) She might look extremely ordinary but all the hot guys would fall for her faster than you can say 'Yes we can' ignoring the advances of the dumb, bitchy blonde who is hot but nonetheless the 'bad girl'.

The perfect Miss GTS

Miss Mono-Expressioned...err Bella Swan from Twilight

The dumb, bitchy blonde

Caroline from The Vampire Diaries

6.)The thuggish looking popular jock - blonde if he is the ill-famed bully, dark-haired if he is the guy-about-to-have-a-change-of-heart, who will ditch his blonde, conniving girlfriend and transform into a good person thanks to Miss GTS.
Classic case in example

 Finn Hudson from Glee

7.)Even though Miss GTS speaks of  'true love' and appears to be a loner with a solitary best friend (who will be an African American/nerdy girl with glasses without fail) she is always plotting inventive ways of getting to jump the hero's bones. Alternately our innocent Miss GTS keeps switching back and forth between two hot guys.

8.)The slut who gets herself pregnant or is doing drugs and gets lectured on about how one should lead her life by Miss GTS even though her own life is pretty much screwed as well.

 Adrianna from 90210

9.)There's always the dorky teacher who takes no bullshit from his students and as a direct consequence of that, is labeled as one who doesn't understand the 'issues' centering a teen. There's also another good-looking, charismatic young teacher whose side-job is to go around offering free counseling to drug-addicts, pregnant teens, the Goths and other social rejects on campus. (Dude, you could seriously consider becoming a therapist as an alternative career option)

10.) And lastly no matter what, high school students must never worry about education. They will attend school in the skimpiest of outfits, gossip in class or make paper planes completely ignoring the presence of the teacher, conspire against the good people, join the football/basketball team, worry about part-time jobs and which party to attend during the weekend, make out in front of lockers. But what they must never do is study. It's against the universal laws governing high-school dramas.

P.S : I was absolutely smitten with the Twilight books a coupla years back but seriously...the whole vampire-human romance angle has started to get on my nerves. Oh and somebody provide the makers of crap teen dramas with some innovative ideas. For our sanity's sake.

Now that you are over the vampire thing...how about writing a spoof of having zoombie obsession...;)

How true! I see almost all the mentioned points in all the dramas...I so hate the "past" thing and a plain girl hopping from one hot guys to another.

ha ha ... somethings never change - bollywood masalas and American teen draamas :P

Girish said...

LOL..

But how could you!!
Not Bella Swan!!

1. Not so annoying! They just want us to remember where the drama is actually taking back!!

The 2,4 points are annoying cliches!

About 3, I'm a guy!! You know my opinion! :)

5 - I agree with u on the blonde issue!

But Bella Swan is not a Miss GTS! (Coming from a Twi-hard, I guess it won't hold much)

6 is not always true. Look at Matt from The Vampire Diaries!
Glee is dumb!

7 - Tweens love those kinda things! Pretty boring when one has seen plenty of those! (Except Twilight Saga!!)

8 - More brownie for the GTS! Horrible cliche!!

9 - Their first job would have been as a therapist! lol

10 - Do u seriously want to see whole episodes of them studying!!!

PS: Been in love with the Twilight books for 2 years now & still love em! :)

Was a HUGE fan of 'High School Musical 1,2', 'The OC', 'Life As We Know It' & many others while I was a teen!! I don't love them now! But man was I smitten back then!!

Lovely post :)
Just love it xD

Ha ha cliches abound! Nice observation. But it's a fact that most of the schools in the US are named that way and they don't have uniforms. Only a few private schools have uniforms.

LOL Well spotted!

lol Teen dramas are some of the most boring things to watch. No wonder they're getting scarce.

wonderful observations Sammy :)
Actually all these common points & plots make up for some of the most popular teen dramas of all times.

Moral of the story: Do not watch teen dramas once you are past your teens, else you won't be able to swallow them ;)

Haha so true!!I would like to add High School Musical to the list :)

@The Laughing Man: It's not just about Twilight. I have something against all other vampire romances and series with similar themes that Twilight has spawned like The Vampire Diaries, Vampire Kisses and so on. Grr it's high time they should stop cashing in on the popularity of one series. Oh and I already read the article on the things Hollywood computers do..like upload virus n stuff. I think someone posted the link on Amalga. :P

@Anish: Hehe glad you liked it. I used to watch a lot of teen dramas at one point. But I think I've matured now.

@Sid: Zombie obsession? Thing is I haven't watched too many zombie movies to come up with a bunch of observations on them. Maybe sometime in the future. Thanks for reading :)

@Nethra: It doesn't make any sense right? That's how mindless these dramas are becoming.

@Lakshmi Rajan: And saas-bahu soaps. These things are constants in life. :P

@Girish: See I'll tell you why I hate Bella Swan. She is a really really boring girl..with ordinary looks. How the hell can she make all the guys fall for her? That's just nonsense. And besides I hate the Twilight movies..not the books. Kristen Stewart looks stone-faced and has like zero acting skills. I'd rather watch paint dry than watch her struggle as Bella.
About the studying thingie...the point I wanted to make was that these people do not ever worry about education. I mean it's the last thing on a high-school student's mind. Drugs, pregnancy, sex, tormented past, crush on hot teacher, rowdy parties, defying school rules,bullying...seriously is this what high school is all about?

Samadrita said...

@Giribala: Ah is that the case? But in Gilmore Girls Rory was part of an elite prep school called Chilton and it had a uniform. And it was one series where the teens were shown with some amount of basic sense. In any case, is there a single high school for every town?

@Ritu di: Hehe yea I've watched so many that there's no way I'd miss these points.

@D2: They're getting scarce? really? I thought they kept on increasing in numbers. *sigh* I hope they become extinct one day though. *fingers crossed*

@dialoguewithyou: Exactly. I've quit watching. I dloaded and started watching The Vampire Diaries..but I must say I'm bored already.

@Avada Kedavra: Actually I was thinking of putting up Vanessa Hudgens' pic as the brunette but then chose Kristen Stewart's. :P

Girish said...

I don't know I fell for her! But I did!
I liked her before Twilight came around, but absolutely loved her after Twilight!! (sounds crazy right? I know)

Glad to hear u don't hate the books :) I understand why many hate the movies!

Zero-acting ability! I guess u haven't followed Kristen's career!
Try these movies of her to see what an amazing performer she really is:

-Panic Room (I guess u would have seen this!)
-Speak (Such a fantabulous performance! She can't speak to anyone about her inner demons & u will shed tears for her)
-Into The Wild (Critically acclaimed Sean Penn movie! I saw this when I was 18 & I was very bored until Kristen came on screen! Didn't like slow dramas much back then! Very short appearance, but powerful acting!)
-The Runaways (a biopic on the singer Joan Jett)

Twilight may be the low point for her as an actress! But Bella Swan is more interesting inside her mind which the movies rarely touch upon!!
So not Kristen's fault!!
Vanessa's pic would have been a better choice :P

The only teen drama which stressed on some sort of education was 'The OC'!! And it had scorching hot actors & witty humour to make it very entertaining!! Of course it even had all those things u mentioned!

The Vampire Diaries is here to stay!! The story is taking quite an intense turn!! And I like it. Bear with it for 6-8 episodes & u will also probably like it Sammy! Seriously, TVD is like a mix of Twilight & True Blood! lol...

good observation... even i am surprised with the hoopla that twilight created in the past!

Well, Anime/Manga world has it's own list of annoying cliches (and they exceed 10...) but somehow, I find more innovation in this animation world (yes, I'm talking about teen themed anime/manga...).

[ BTW, normally, I avoid vampire stories/anime/manga/books/what-not... but recently this one manga has caught my interest... so far, it has some cliches, but I'm just 3 chapters into it to make any reviews... I started reading cause I liked the background concept. :) ]

You knocked them down all in just one post! Was fun reading it! And just for the fact, I didn't see any movie except the first part of that Bella drama!

But, you know Bella stays cute, in spite of her wooden face expressions! ;)

Samadrita said...

@Girish: Well maybe she did a good job in those movies..but her Twilight performance is so pathetic I don't think I can ever take a liking to her.
About TVD since I've dloaded the damned thing I need to watch it I guess.

But trust me Korean and Japanese dramas are waaaaaaay better. You'll understand what I'm talking about once you watch a few renowned ones.

@Mohan: Well Twilight story isn't too bad but the movies are horrible. And the whole vampire craze needs to die down now.

@Selenium: I know anime have annoying cliches too...but somehow I prefer them over these ones. :)

@ayu: Well said girl. So do I. Jap and Asian dramas pwn the rest with ease.

@Sourav: These aren't movies...they are tv dramas btw. And yes I know guys find Kristen Stewart hot.

This is probably too late a comment, but regarding point 1 , as someone else pointed out, public schools are really typically named after the cities they are in. The reason being that part of the funds for the public school comes from the city. And the city gets this fund from the the property taxes collected from the people of the city. So if you live in city X, your choice of school is just one - School X. You cannot go to School Y in city Y. Of course, this rule does not appply to private schools, but you have to be somewhat rich to go to a private school.
This was too much information probably, but just wanted to point out that point 1 is actually not a cliche, but a real fact.

Haha! This is so true!

By the way, if you haven't seen it already, do watch "Happy Days". It's a '70s/'80s TV serial about school kids but is brilliantly funny! Quite devoid of any cliches - like the ultimate dont-care-about-girls-hunk: The Fanz!

Awesome stuff - will keep dropping by here!
